X-RAY

MRI Specialists of Tulsa utilizes Myelography for specific cases involving the spinal cord, spinal canal and nerves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Myelogram?

Myelography uses X-rays and a contrast media (dye) to produce detailed images of your spinal canal, spinal cord and nerves. This procedure is used to diagnose disc problems, postoperative scarring, narrowing of the spinal canal, spinal tumors and inflammation.

Myelography uses a contrast media, which is injected into your spinal canal during the exam to enhance the X-ray images. Please notify your physician before your exam if you have ever had an adverse reaction to contrast media.

A computed tomography (CT) scan is performed routinely after the myelogram to increase the sensitivity and accuracy of the findings. After the test, you will rest in our recovery room for about one hour.

How will I prepare for my Myelogram?

As with most diagnostic tests, there are several things you must do before and after your exam. Please consult your physician if you have any questions about your eligibility.

First, tell your physician and our technologist if any of the following apply:

  • You are pregnant, think you might be or you are breast feeding
  • You are allergic to local anesthetics, contrast agents (X-ray dye or iodine) or any other medications
  • You are taking any anticoagulant (blood thinning) medications

Second, please follow the instructions listed below. Failure to comply may result in cancellation of your myelogram.

  1. Call the center at least two days before your appointment so that your medical history can be taken and specific instructions given.
  2. Make arrangements for someone to drive you home after your test; you are not allowed to drive for 24 hours.
  3. Do not drink any alcoholic beverages 48 hours before or after your myelogram.
  4. Bring your prescribed medications to take before, and possibly after, your myelogram.
  5. Bring your myelography order sheet you were given by your physician.
  6. You may eat a light breakfast and drink liquids until it is time for your test.

After my exam, what do I need to do?

After your exam, please do the following at home:

  1. You might find it helpful if someone remains at home with you the first day and night after your exam.
  2. You should remain in bed or a comfortable recliner the day of your exam and the day after your exam, but do not lie flat for at least 24 hours. You head should be raised about 30 degrees during this time. You may use two or three pillows to help prop up your head.
  3. Continue taking your regular medications unless otherwise instructed by your physician.
  4. It is important that you drink eight glasses of liquids the day of and the day after your myelogram.
